#44 Boyana Lake-Mount Vitosha

A misty, slightly rainy birthday walk on Monday which was a lot of fun! After waiting in the square in Sofia by the national theatre to meet our guide, Jordan, and two other hikers who were lovely and walked the same pace as Flo and I, we got taxis to Boyana church to start. We walked up steeply to begin and there were a few rocky sections to climb over which made it more challenging and fun. There were leaves everywhere and it was a bit slippy so I was going carefully. We got drenched at one point so Jordan whipped out a nice red poncho, the rest of us were content to get a little wet. Jordan told us about how when the weather is bad sometimes men want to turn around when he is guiding a hike but how ‘girls never quit’ which i liked.

We stopped at the waterfall which was lovely despite the poor visibility and had lunch. A dog from the town liked the look of our sandwiches and begged the whole time. He then followed us from there to the viewpoint after lunch! So cute. The viewpoint didn’t have a view to offer sadly and it would have been nice to see Sofia from here- but what can you expect walking in November. Easier terrain led us to a small pretty lake, man made by the communists a while back. A chatty, easy stroll took us back to the church where we went our separate ways to get cosy and warm again. Not sure how far we hiked but it took about 3/3.5 hours.

#44 beautiful Bulgaria!
