20- Lake Helen Mackenzie/Battleship Lake Loop

The first day of a few days away in the Strathcona area I drove up to Mount Washington area to meet up with Will, Margeaux and Megan to walk to Lake Helen Mackenzie. A shortish and uneventful walk with some boardwalk to start with and lots of patches of snow, it took a couple of hours to reach there. We stopped for a snack at the lake before heading on to the campsite and set up our tents on the camping pads overlooking the still, beautiful lake. We had the whole campsite to ourselves and it was eerie being up there in the snow. We walked Megan back towards the carpark via Battleship lake where we stopped to make food at a picnic area before heading back to the campsite for the night. We were all exhausted and turned in early- I’d mistakenly had a really busy weekend beforehand where i’d opened the office at work at 6.30am three days in a row and gone out in the evenings too.

I slept badly but luckily was super warm despite it being minus 2 degrees as i had a billion layers on. We all got up early and had a big breakfast before heading out on the Kwai Lake loop (next post!). When we got back from that exhausted we packed up our gear and did the last couple of kilometres back to the car park via Battleship Lake. A beautiful early June/ wintery walk but back at Paradise Meadows it was summer again and the wildflowers were looking stunning.
